    Beginner's guide

How to Read the Racing Form

Racing Form pages look dense because they pack a horse's history into compact lines. Start with the latest past-performance line, then read across it in a consistent order before entering a race.

    A beginner's read-through

    Start with the latest line

Look for context, not one magic number.
    1. 01

Find the horse number and name

The number identifies the horse in today's field. Match it with the printed name before reading any figures, especially when entries look similar.

    2. 02

      Read the latest past-performance line

Begin with the most recent line, usually the first line in the horse's history. Note the date, track, surface, distance, and race type or listed value.

    3. 03

      Check the finish and margin

Read the finish position and the margin behind the winner. One result gives context about that start, not a guarantee about the next one.

    4. 04

      Scan the useful signals

When the form prints them, review the speed figure, jockey and trainer, equipment or medication notes, and the track or course condition.

    5. 05

      Carry over the basics

For this calculator, enter today's purse, choose Dirt or Turf, and copy the Last Race Value and Post Odds from the most recent line. Add the dates, purses, and finishes from the two latest completed races.

Good habit: Read one complete line before comparing numbers across horses. Date, track, distance, surface, and race type give the figures useful context.

    Common race-type examples

The label names the race type. The dollar figure is the value shown with it. Abbreviations vary by publication, so copy the wording from your form.

    MCL 7500

    CLM 10000

Claiming: A claiming race with a $10,000 claiming level shown.

    ALW 34000

Allowance: An allowance race with a $34,000 listed value, with eligibility set by the race conditions.

    Stakes Grade III 100000

Grade III stakes: A stakes race identified as Grade III with a $100,000 listed value.

    Grade I II 200000-300000

Grade I or Grade II: An example range showing Grade I or Grade II stakes values from $200,000 to $300,000.
